Friday

Join us in Lima where we’ll spend two nights at the Estelar Hotel in the beachfront suburb of Miraflores. The Conservancy will provide 24-hour airport transportation to the hotel.

August 23

Saturday

We’ll spend the morning at leisure. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Archaeological and Anthropological Museum as well as the Larco Herrera Museum.

August 24

Sunday

We’ll spend the morning touring modern and colonial Lima. In the afternoon, we’ll fly to the coastal city of Trujillo, founded in 1536 by Francisco Pizarro. We’ll spend the next three nights at the Costa del Sol Trujillo.

August 25

Monday

In the morning we’ll visit the Trujillo University Museum and tour the colonial city. We’ll visit the charming fishing village of Huanchaco and the Arco Iris, a Chimu temple that was covered with sand until the 1960s.

August 26

Tuesday

In the morning we’ll explore the massive Temples of the Sun and Moon, constructed by the Moche, as well as the new Moche museum. After lunch we’ll visit the fabled ruins of Chan Chan, the huge capital of the Chimu Empire and one of the largest pre-Columbian cities in the Americas.

August 27

Wednesday

We’ll travel by bus to Chiclayo, located on the north coast of Peru. On our way, we’ll stop at the ruins of Huaca El Brujo, a newly excavated Moche ruin. We’ll also visit Sipán, a Moche site with spectacular royal tombs. We’ll spend the next two evenings in Chiclayo.

Thursday

We’ll tour the pyramids at Túcume and Sicán and visit the Sicán National Museum. Next is the new Royal Tombs of Sipán Museum, where exhibits include the golden treasures from royal Moche tombs.

August 29

Friday

After a morning flight to Cuzco (changing planes in Lima), we’ll spend the rest of the day relaxing and getting acclimated. We’ll spend the next two evenings at the historic Plaza de Armas Hotel on the central plaza.

Saturday

We’ll travel by bus to the Sacred Valley, stopping to visit the impressive Inca sites of Tambomachay and the baths at Puka Pukara along the way. At Pisac we’ll visit the extensive Inca fortress high on the mountain with its impressive temples and terraces, then visit the notable Pisac Market. We’ll spend the next two evenings at the Sonesta Yucay Hotel in the Sacred Valley.

August 30

Sunday

In the morning we will travel to a remote mountain village virtually unchanged since Inca times. We will then visit Ollantaytambo, an impressive Inca ruin and modern Inca village. 

September 1

Monday

We’ll take the vistadome train to Machu Picchu, a site unknown to the outside world for centuries, and spend the afternoon touring its ruins. We’ll have dinner and spend the night at the elegant new Inkaterra Hotel.

September 2

Tuesday

We’ll visit Machu Picchu in the morning where there is an option for hiking to nearby Inca sites. In the afternoon we’ll take the train back to Cuzco and the Plaza de Armas Hotel.

September 3

Wednesday

We’ll visit Qorikancha, an Inca temple whose walls were once covered with gold. In the afternoon we’ll take a walking tour of Cuzco and visit the Inca museum. We’ll have time to visit Cuzco’s famous silver and alpaca shops.

September 4

Thursday

We’ll tour sites near Cuzco, including Sacsayhuaman with its colossal stone walls; Pikillacta, a pre-Inca Wari ceremonial center; and Tipón, an Inca agricultural center with impressive water works.

September 5

Friday

We’ll take a morning flight from Cuzco to Lima and have a farewell lunch at La Rosa Nautica on the Pacific Ocean. Day rooms have been reserved at the Estelar Hotel so that we can rest before boarding evening flights to the United States. Transportation to the airport will be provided.

Tour Details

Cost includes first-class hotel accommodations based on double occupancy (single supplement is $1,200), air travel (4 flights) within Peru, meals as indicated, expert Conservancy and special guides, admittance fees, tours and orientations, background reading, and ground travel to locations on the tour.  

Cuzco is at an altitude of 11,000 feet. Several sites exceed altitudes of 12,000 feet. People unaccustomed to high altitudes may experience fatigue and dizziness. The tour is not recommended for anyone with a heart or respiratory ailment or any condition that may be exacerbated by high altitudes. A moderate amount of walking is required. Some trails are rough. Participants are responsible for being in sufficiently good health to take the trip.  It is highly recommended that you consult your physician.
