Wells Petroglyph Preserve
The Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project is now offering Public Tours of the Wells Petroglyph Preserve Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 8:30am (9:30 am fall and winter). Reservations required, cost is $35 per person, and tour lasts about 2 hours.
The 181-acre Preserve is located midway between Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Donated to the Archaeological Conservancy by the Project’s founder, Katherine Wells, it contains over 10,000 petroglyphs in Northern New Mexico.
Our docents lead visitors through an insightful two-hour tour representing Archaic, Ancestral Puebloan and Historic Period time periods.

General Information about all tours:
Bring a hat, water, sunscreen, a walking stick if desired, and boots or sturdy shoes. Binoculars come in handy! Be aware that tours cover steep and sometimes rugged terrain.
Please follow the official instructions attached to the confirmation email to navigate to our trailhead. We advise downloading and printing prior to departure.
MPPP office is open Tuesday through Saturday; actual hours vary as we may be out leading a tour. Correspondence occurs best via email. If you have any trouble while booking your tour please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We lead tours in small groups of approximately 6 people.Self-guided tours are not permitted.
Tours begin at 9:30 AM (8:30 AM in June, July and August) and last 2 hours (approx.).
We recommend arriving 15 minutes early to prepare for hiking. Please be prompt. Tours leave the parking area at the designated start time.
Children under 10 are not permitted.
Pets are not permitted; service dogs are allowed.
Photography is allowed for personal enjoyment only. Commercial photography is prohibited.
No tours are scheduled Sundays or Mondays. Tours are not scheduled on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the day following and Christmas or the day following.
Please be advised that once Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project has confirmed your tour reservation – your tour fee is non-refundable. Occasionally tours are rescheduled for unavoidable reasons such as weather, safety, trail conditions, illness or other emergency needs. In the event of a cancellation, you will have two weeks to rebook a future tour. After that time, please consider your tour fee a donation to MPPP- we thank you!
