Cliff dwellings are among the most amazing archaeological sites in the world: walls and doorways, towers and kivas, all tucked neatly into sandstone cliffs.  More than 700 years ago, the Anasazi and Sinagua cultures of the Four Corners region called these sites  home. Warm and dry during the winter, the secluded pueblos may also have protected villagers from attacking enemies.

Our tour will journey to the most famous of the region’s cliff dwellings, as well as modern-day pueblos and several Conservancy preserves, and be guided by archaeologists well-versed in the region’s prehistory.

The Smith Family Archaeological Preserve, located on the western shore of Utah Lake south of Saratoga Springs, will be offering public tours this fall beginning September 7.   Preserve volunteers will conduct fall tours every Saturday from 10 a.m to 12 p.m. through October 25.

The Smith Preserve contains over 240 Native American Rock art panels as well as other cultural resources that span three time periods going back at least 5,000 years. Tours of the preserve will be accomplished by preserve volunteers using the preserve’s trail system. The trail system can be traversed by any person in moderate physical shape. Unfortunately, the preserve’s trail system is not handicapped accessible. These guided tours will include some of the preserve’s most impressive and significant petroglyph panels.

Tours will be limited to a total of 20 people, so registration is encouraged early.  Visit their Facebook site to reserve your space today! Otherwise, tour participation will be on a first come, first serve basis. The public is not allowed access to the preserve, for security and preservation reasons, unless they are participating in a planned event at the preserve, including a tour, under the direction of preserve volunteers.

TOUR | Native Peoples of Florida’s Mangrove Coast @ Southern Florida | Ohio | United States

For over a thousand years the Calusa, Tocobaga, and Seminole dominated southern Florida.  They developed complex civilizations, created breathtaking artwork, and constructed monumental earthworks.  Time and again, they defeated those who attempted to subjugate them.

Our exciting journey will take us from the ancient mound center at Crystal River to the man-made island of Mound Key, the Calusa’s capital.  Along the way, we’ll visit the key sites of Florida’s original inhabitants, explore the unique estuarine environment in which these people lived, and encounter a variety of wildlife such as manatees, dolphins, and alligators.

Joining us for the entire tour will be Dr. Jeffrey M. Mitchem, an expert in early Spanish and Native American contact in the Southeastern United States. He is an archaeologist with the Arkansas Archaeological Survey as well as a board member of the Florida Public Archaeology Network, the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education, and The Archaeological Conservancy.

Join us in Oaxaca, Mexico during one of the most unusual festivals anywhere – the Day of the Dead.  On this day, people prepare home altars and decorate cemeteries to welcome the dead, who are believed to return to enjoy the food and drink they indulged in during life.  Not at all a morbid occasion, the town is filled with celebration.

Oaxaca lies in a semitropical valley surrounded by the peaks of the Sierra Madre del Sur.  The city’s architecture reflects its rich Spanish Colonial and modern history.  Vast ruins of Ancient Mixtecan and Zapotecan civilizations lie just outside the city. Oaxacan archaeologist Dr. Robert Markens will accompany us on our trip.

Explore Veracruz
